THE OBJECTIVE: The Rookwood fountain was a class gift to the university from the class of 1921. It shows the progression of how we came to understand modern day chemistry, and the theories that helped us on our way. The fountain was being moved to UC's New Old Chem building, and wanted an informational graphic to show the fountains importance.
THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE: There were different stages that needed to happen to create this informational graphic. First, I took a deep dive into the history of this fountain and what each symbol, image, and tile represented. I then had to replicate the icons from scratch in illustrator and figure out how to show what they mean in an interesting way.
THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE: The next stage was making the information digestible by color coding which symbols are group by their time frame. A color palette was created based on the colors of the fountain.

FINAL GRAPHIC: After what seemed like a million different layouts and tiny changes, we settled on a final design. The panel on the left is a brief, easy-to-read history of the fountain and what each pice means and why it is important to the history of chemistry. The grouping of the panels on the left is based on their location and layout on the original fountain- which is located in the same hallway as this graphic.
